Miles Davis — Kind of Blue
Cool, spacious modal jazz that never really gets old.
Kind of Blue is Miles Davis surrounded by an absurd lineup: John Coltrane, Cannonball Adderley, Bill Evans, Wynton Kelly, Paul Chambers, and Jimmy Cobb. It’s one of those albums that sounds relaxed on the surface but has a ton going on underneath. Even if you know absolutely nothing about jazz, it’s an easy record to fall into.
What it feels like
Calm, sophisticated, and almost weightless. It has that late-night jazz-club feeling without being sleepy. The music leaves a lot of air between the notes, which is a big part of why it’s so easy to keep coming back to.
MAX AUDIO SCORE
9.8/10
Essential. Spacious, timeless, and one of the easiest jazz records to recommend.
Best time to listen to this:
- Late at night with the lights low and nothing else going on.
- Sunday morning coffee when the house is still quiet.
- Right after changing something in the audio setup and you want a familiar record to tell you what changed.
What to listen for
The space around the trumpet and saxophones, the cymbals sitting way back in the room, and how natural the piano sounds. A good setup should make the whole thing feel open instead of crowded.
